SELAMAT HARI DEEPAVALI

I gave the Indian students in my English class a nice Deepavali surprise.

As soon as class was over, I called Melvin, Kogila and Shalini to follow me to the parking lot. The kids were suspicious at first because they seemed to think that I wanted them to help me out with something.

"If you come with me, I'll give you special leaks for the next examination paper..."

The kids' eyes widened with greed. "Really?"

"Nope, just kidding. But I do want to give you something special."

Despite their hopes dashed, the kids neverthelessly followed me to the car outside the tuition centre.

As expected, the kids were giggling when they took a closer look at my car. I don't know why Malaysians find the Juara ugly. If something is able to make people laugh then it must be beautiful, isn't it? That's why I asked Dad to buy me the Juara. The first time I saw my baby, she made laugh and it was what people call "love at first sight".

My townbox champion... the Proton Juara.
Mama bought it for me at RM 50k when it first got out.

"I know it looks like a washing machine on wheels," I explained, "but this baby is a chick magnet, okay? You can ask all my girlfriends if you don't believe me. But don't tell them they're going out with me at the same time."

More kiddy laughter ensued. I smiled. That bought me some time to get the carkeys out and unlock the car. I opened the boot to reveal the goodies inside. Several "ooh"s and "aah"s came out replacing the earlier laughter.

I brought some food hampers (that Mama had stocked up in case some guests come to her house for a visit) as festive gifts for Melvin, Kogila and Shalini. Mind you, I've already checked the content of each product and all of them are melamine-free, okay?

"Are these for us, sir?" Melvin, the ever so precocious one, asked.

"Yeah, these are specially for you guys. Now quick, take them before I change my mind."

The kids obviously didn't want me to change my mind. The car boot soon became empty before you can even finish this sentence: "the-baker-baked-me-a-blueberry-and-butter-brownie".

After a loud chant of "Thank you, sir!", the kids ran off happily with their goodies while boasting to each other that his or her hamper was bigger than the other's. They're all actually the same...

I think I saw Shalini turned to wave goodbye at me as I glanced at the side-mirror.

Got inside, rolled down the window, played Marylin Manson songs on the disc player and fell asleep in the car for forty-five minutes before driving back to my apartment. I think it's finally getting to me... all this juggling with my studies, research project, club activities, the upcoming archery tournament and part-time job...

Driving alone in the night, day after day...
Welcome to Amel's life.

No moonlight to accompany me in my journey. Everything is dark out here in the night. But I pray that everyone will find the light out of their own darkness. Including me.

Selamat Hari Deepavali... Melvin, Kogila and Shalini.
