THE HINDRAF HINDRANCE

I wonder what's going on in Kuala Lumpur these days - it has been like a ghost town here since the BERSIH demonstration was held a few days ago.

The school break's started, but the city seems quite isolated. I thought it must have been because the year-end sales haven't begun yet, since Gee hasn't bugged me with any calls lately. Or it's probably because most people haven't received their salaries till the end of the month.

Oddly, a police block had been set up at the edge of the city nearby Batu Caves this morning, and cars seemed to avoid entering Kuala Lumpur since then. Gopi informed me that he heard some sort of rally was going to be held at Batu Caves, so he decided to join in to check out the situation.

It turned out that the Hindu Rights Action Force (Hindraf) was planning to hand over a class action suit against the British government for bringing Indians to pre-independence Malaya and exploiting them as labourers. A group of Indian lawyers were to lead a march to the British Embassy to hand over the said petition.

I read more in the Net about the rally out of curiousity. I don't know whether to believe or not that the group had filed a suit of RM 13.5 trillion (USD 4 trillion) at the Royal Courts of Justice in London claiming that the British were to blame for the marginalisation of the Indians in Malaysia (how do you count up to trillions?!). This means that the suit is equivalent to RM 1 mil (RM 3.4 mil) for every Indian in Malaysia. So every Indian in Malaysia will be a millionaire without working a sweat. I gotta be nice with Gopi afterwards...

Ampang is closed since 8 a.m. this morning, and it is very boring to stay at home watching Pirates of the Carribean 2 on Astro HBO Channel when you have been planning to see Beowulf at TGV. Gopi sent a text message saying the rally he's in was heading to Kuala Lumpur. He hasn't any idea what was exactly happening, so he just followed along.

I thought I saw several FRU trucks rushing from Damansara to the City Centre this afternoon. Turned on the news and watched a scene that might have been a rush for My Chemical Romance concert tickets. It was reported about 200 people joining the Hindraf march had been arrested and deported away by the authorities. I just hope that Gopi doesn't get into any trouble.
