Yep - they detained the book vendor I talked to alright. He was nowhere to be seen on the second day I went to Putra World Trade Center. I noticed 'certain political books' were missing from the scene. Of course, I'm talking about the books written by Zaid Ibrahim and S.H Alattas.
I have always wondered how S.H Alattas managed to produce several books in a very short time. Did he hire people to write those books and let them use his name? I remember reading R.L Stine's books as a kid and discovering that some of the books have different writing styles. It was like looking at several different fingerprints under an individual profile. It occurred to me then that R.L Stine must have not written all of his books after all, but rather, delegate his work to unknown authors who penned under his name. S.H Alattas probably does that too.
Maybe if I get tired writing my blog, I could hire other people to write it for me under my name.
I followed Big Sis Nur and Stefan to PWTC today. Mama didn't join us; she said "she's more interested in the bigger fishes". I don't know what she meant by that.
Like yesterday, the halls of the center are filled with people from every district of the nation. There were Puteri UMNO members in their pink and white baju kebaya and baju kurung, Pemuda UMNO in their black songkok and white baju melayu and red songket, paparazzi with their flashing cameras, policemen in their serious dark blue uniforms, sentries in yellow berets and green suits, groups of candidate supporters in numbered shirts and jerseys ... the colours made me feel dizzy.
The sales booths seemed to spread rapidly like fire compared to yesterday. More items for sale are now added. I don't like the booth promoting the RX water stuff - the promoters suck at promoting their product (they were supposed to introduce the water filter to potential customers, not the filtered water). There is also an exhibition organized by the Ministry of Rural and Regional Development in PWTC at the same time with the UMNO General Assembly. You get to sample free food in this exhibition. I ate a whole pile of sample chocolates at one booth. Sweet.
A punk kid was playing with his PSP instead of watching over his booth. He quickly hid his PSP inside the cash box when he realized I was staring at him. How can anyone rely on a kid like this to watch over their sales?!
There's this booth selling nice-looking songket cloths called 'Manang Songket'. Is it called Manang because the weaving art comes from the Minangkabau traditional art, or because the founder's name is Manan but pronounced as Manang in Terengganu Malay dialect? Whatever. Seeing the songket reminds me of what Dad said to me last year during Hari Raya:-
"Look, Amel... I have learnt to wind the songket without your mother's help after our divorce. See how I survived all this time! You should learn to wind your own songket too, you wimp."
Hearing that from a French man just makes you wanna weep.
Stefan and Big Sis Nur were talking to each other about something that's happening in UMNO and they seem to understand perfectly well about politics. Why am I not able to understand everything like them? There were talks about the dismissed candidate Ali Rustam, the position of Khairy Jamaludin in UMNO Youth, Mahathir's possible comeback, etc.
I wish I could comprehend what is happening around me. Am I really inept in understanding serious stuff? Or is politics just not my cup of tea? I hate having to know everything about stuff and people that are not related to me, but that's how a person survive in this world, right? When a person is ignorant about his environment, he's useless. I don't want to feel so useless anymore. So, whether politics is my cup of tea or coffee I must know at least a bit of it.
Stefan drove us to Mama's house after we had dinner at Chicken Hut. We are staying there for the whole week. I didn't realize I had dozed off along the way (it's all Stefan's fault - he turned on some boring radio channel that drove me to sleep) until Big Sis Nur woke me up. "You look exactly like when you were 10 sleeping at the backseat of the car," she said, smiling at me. It's so rare to see my sister smile ever since we were kids.
Sis, when I was 10 you were forced to grow up.
Turned on the tv and had some shows interrupted in sequence by the UMNO post poll results announced today. Here are the results as recorded by The News Straits Times Online:
10:15pm: Datuk Seri Shahrizat Jalil trounced Tan Sri Rafidah Aziz tonight to win the hotly contested Wanita Umno chief's post, polling 507 votes against the loser's 280 votes.
10:30pm: Datuk Rosnah Abdul Rashid Shirlin has been elected the new Puteri Umno chief, polling 245 votes to beat five other candidates at the movement's elections.
11:15pm: Khairy Jamaluddin has won the Umno Youth chief's post after polling 304 votes out of the 793 possible votes, defeating narrowly Datuk Mukhriz Mahathir and early front runner Dr Khir Toyo in perhaps the stiffest ever battle for the post.
I'm off to bed now. Stefan is threatening to dig a grave for my laptop if I don't shut it off right this minute. Hopefully tomorrow will be an exciting day in PWTC.
"AKU SKANDAL" BY HUJAN is playing in my mind today.
